What size saucepan do I need?

Compare 1–2 quarts for small amounts, roughly 2.5–3.5 quarts for a medium pan, and 4 quarts or more for larger batches. These are starting bands, not serving guarantees.

Size the cooking job

Match capacity to the recipe and leave working room. The opening, handle span and lid can matter as much as another quart. Consider how the pan will feel when full.

Estimate liquid portions from capacity using your own fill level, or measure a pan you already own. Height is not substituted for interior depth.

Questions before you choose

Does the advertised diameter describe the cooking surface?

Not necessarily. The rim and flat cooking surface are different measurements. A missing flat diameter stays unknown.

Are the serving estimates guaranteed?

No. They are arithmetic using your chosen volume and portion. Food shape, cooking method and working room change what fits.
