How the calculation works

A round tapered vessel uses V = πh(D² + Dd + d²) / 12, where D is interior top diameter, d is interior base diameter and h is depth. A rectangle uses length × width × depth. The calculation does not subtract rounded corners or account for a curved bowl wall.

Quarts, liters and area

One US liquid quart is 57.75 cubic inches, or 0.946352946 liters. One inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters. A flat round base has area π(d/2)². This helps compare geometric cooking area; it does not establish how much food will brown well in a pan.
